Our Story

We met in Greensboro, North Carolina shortly after Klara moved there to start a 6 month short term assignment for Volvo Group Trucks Technology. Adam had moved from Pennsylvania down to Greensboro a year earlier after accepting the job offer for Volvo Group Trucks Operations.

It was just a regular Friday in October and plans were being made for an after work hangout at a local downtown brewery. As Adam walked into “Joymongers brewery”, Klara thought “that guy is cute!”. For the rest of that evening, Klara laughed at every single joke Adam made, even though none of them were very good!

The following day plans were made for a Halloween party, so Adam made sure to get an invite. Here is where we really got to know each other better by spending the night competing in beer pong as the perfect team.

As Klara’s short term assignment was coming to an end, Adam was left with tears in his eyes after dropping Klara off at the airport (the first of many times). It wasn’t long after that day when Adam secured a short term assignment of his own in Gothenburg! Back together again and Klara had to show Adam all the best of living in Sweden.

Sadly the short term assignment was cut short by the rapid start of the pandemic. Adam was sent home immediately and Klara headed to Stockholm to spend time near family. The following year was filled with the reality of having a long-distance relationship, living through a pandemic, and trying to figure out how to live together again.

Luckily due to friendly immigration laws in Sweden, Adam was able to visit the country after having applied for a residence permit thanks to the Swedish policy “Kärlek är inte turism” (Love is not tourism).

There was even a grand plan executed to smuggle Klara into the US after spending time in Mexico, to be able to visit Adam’s family and attend Patrick and Gillian’s wedding (Adam’s sister).

In September 2021, the Swedish government recognized the couple as “sambos” (Sweden’s equivalent of common law marriage) when Adam moved with all of his belongings to Gothenburg to live together with Klara again.

On a cold and rainy day in February 2024, we decided (or at least Klara thought it was a joint decision) to go running along the trail of Bohusleden. By a beautiful spot, in between a lake and a massive rock wall, Adam went down on one knee and proposed! Klara said yes and after followed the happiest trail run we will probably ever experience.

Over the last years, Adam has slowly been learning how to be Swedish and will hopefully even be recognized as a Swedish citizen by the time of the wedding! Let’s see if it will happen!
